Conference room with white curved ceiling

Decoustics Combines Products to Optimize Acoustics and Beauty at Middle Tennessee State University. For a new 840-seat ballroom at the Middle Tennessee State University student union in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the architect specified a ceiling consisting of large, two-tones arched rectangular panels in a variety of sizes. To create the custom panels, Decoustics merged two products – Claro, a fiberglass acoustical panel with a smooth white surface with Quadrillo, a cut-out wood acoustic panel serving as a border around the fiberglass. To achieve the challenging arc pattern, Decoustics constructed a physical mock-up of the design to ensure the grid and panels followed the exact radius, and worked closely with ceilings contractor for installation.

Custom-shaped Claro panels arranged in a triangular pattern add striking effect to this cafeteria’s ceiling.

One of the key components of the dramatic lobby design is a custom-engineered Ceilencio® ceiling system with Claro® panels. Ceilencio gave Boston design architect Machado and Silvetti Associates complete freedom to create a beautiful 3,600 square-foot geometric ceiling design, featuring diamond-shaped panels that measure 11 feet x 8 feet. An integrated acoustical ceiling panel system with endless possibilities, Ceilencio offered a custom-engineered grid, ceiling panels and butterfly clips designed and manufactured to meet the specific demands of the challenging design, as well as the color the architect needed to complement the surrounding structure.

Ceilencio consists of a proprietary concealed extruded aluminum grid and panels with a clear vapor retarder backing. The grid is easy to install and 100-percent downward accessible via a unique torsion spring mechanism, which permits individual panels to be “hinged” down — or completely removed, if necessary — for convenient access to mechanical and electrical services. The grid is suspended using hanger wires, rods and similar suspension components.

Claro® fiberglass panels, Ceilencio® suspension grid and butterfly clips are an ideal solution to the complex undulating ceiling design challenges for the new Temple University, Food Court in Philadelphia, PA. Manufactured to the specifications of MGA Partners, Architects of Philadelphia, PA., the ceiling panels provide visual interest during the day and a striking lighting element when seen from outside at night. The custom Ceilencio® suspension system grid and butterfly clips allowed for the 1/8” reveals making the design and installation a success.

Decoustics’ Claro offers an original ceiling solution to Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children. For construction of two floors of the 785,000 sq.ft. Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in Birmingham, AL, the architect specified custom sound-absorbent Claro panels in a unique suspended Ceilencio ceiling grid from Decoustics, with custom-designed butterfly clips to address the challenge presented by the hospitals curved interior walls. Strict precision during the engineering and design process was critical, as the slightest error would have thrown the ceiling off course and made it impossible for the panels to fit properly. However, detailed photographs and measurements using 3D laser technology-enabled the installer to complete a flawless installation.

Design intent called for a fluid shape of the ceiling with thick floating segments. The seams between the panels had to align perfectly from one segment to another to create a clean continous transition between the reveals. Panel edges were finished with Design Returns to visually add depth and conceal the suspension for the polished floating effect.
